ZaaeePregnancy and postpartum hair care

Our story

There wasn't a space for this, so we built one.

She lived it. He went looking for answers. This site is what we wish we'd had — information, not a sales pitch.

It started quietly, during pregnancy. A few more hairs than usual in the brush, enough to notice and not enough to worry about. We assumed it was nothing.

Four months after our first baby, my wife was standing at the bathroom sink holding a handful of her own hair.

She wasn't upset about how it looked. She was frightened that something was wrong with her, and nobody had mentioned this was coming. Not in the antenatal classes, not in the discharge paperwork, not in any of the reading we'd done.

So I went looking for her. I expected this to be well covered — it happens to most women, it's not rare — and I expected to find it fast. I didn't. Social media had a lot of noise and not much substance. The articles that existed were thin, or written for clinicians, or written to sell something at the bottom of the page. What was actually useful was scattered across forums, old studies, and comments from other women who'd worked it out for themselves — never in one place, never organised, never easy to hand to someone at 2am who just wants to know if she's okay.

There wasn't a place to send her. So we're building one.

What this site is

This is an awareness project. That's the whole of it.

We're not selling anything here, and there's nothing to buy. What we're doing is writing down what we found, in plain English, so the next person doesn't have to spend the weeks we spent piecing it together.

Two things we wish someone had told us at the start, and they're the reason this exists:

Most of it is normal, and it ends. Postpartum shedding has a name, a timeline and a well-described cause. Knowing that in advance is the difference between "something is wrong with me" and "right, this is the bit everyone gets."

Some of it responds to how you handle your hair, and some of it doesn't. The shed itself is hormonal and runs its course — no amount of care shortens it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. But a good share of what ends up in the brush is breakage, not shedding, and breakage you can genuinely do something about. Knowing which is which is most of the battle.

Who does what

She's the co-founder and she's the reason this exists. She's the one who went through it — the pregnancy changes, the four-month shed, the year of regrowth that nobody photographs. What she wanted to read at 2am and couldn't find is the brief for everything here. She's not a public person and you won't see much of her, and that's her call to make.

I run the operations. I'm an IT professional, not a chemist. What I brought was the ability to go and read the thing properly: the clinical literature, the Australian regulations, the difference between a cosmetic claim and a therapeutic one. I do the research, the writing, this website, and the social accounts. If you've messaged us, you've been talking to me.

What we've decided about how we'll talk to you

We'll say when the evidence is thin. A lot of what circulates about postpartum hair is one small study, stretched. We'll tell you which study, how small, and what it actually measured.

We won't sell you fear. No before-and-afters, no "don't let this happen to you." Postpartum shedding resolves on its own for the overwhelming majority of women, and saying so is more useful than anything anyone could sell you.

We'll keep this free of anything to buy. No shop, no affiliate links, no product recommendations dressed up as advice.

Where we're up to

We're in the research stage, and the research is the point. That means working through the clinical literature, understanding what's actually established and what's just widely repeated, and being deliberate about every claim before it goes on the site.

What we're doing right now is writing it all down, which is what the hair guide is. We'd be writing it regardless, because it's the thing we needed and couldn't find.
